I teach first grade in a large, urban school district. My school is a Title 1 school. My students come from a variety of ethnic and low socio-economic backgrounds. We have a high ELL population. Last year, unfortunately, our school was labeled as a "failing school" due to low state test scores. Despite the challenges our students face, our students, parents, and staff work together to give them the best possible education they deserve.
Space is a luxury in my classroom. Most of my students' desks are arranged into cooperative groups. Some of my students, however, need and work better by themselves. Some just need more space that allows them to move a little more, but won't disturb someone else's learning. Because my students' needs are so varied, I have had to be more creative with my classroom setup. I am constantly having to move students around, trying to find that "perfect" fit.
