I work at a Title 1 school where every child receives free breakfast and lunch. Out of my 22 energetic, bright and curious third graders, three have just arrived in the U.S., four are on Individual Education Plans and all speak a language other than English at home. Many of my students’ parents are not literate and have not completed a formal education. So, for these students, the only reading, writing and math supports are at school. Two thirds of my students do not have access to a computer at home. My school does not have the budget to provide supports, tools or technology for individual classrooms.
