After almost three years of learning through COVID in this country, our students deserve the most accessible, comfortable learning spaces possible to facilitate their learning. A supportive teacher is key, but there is more to it than that. School has become a multifaceted space in our country, and we must respond with multifaceted support and spaces
These multifaceted, supportive spaces rely on three key components: accessible content, a comfortable physical space, and ways for students to defuse their stress. The books that I have included in this order will allow me to reach Multilingual Learners (those learning English as a secondary language) and learners experiencing learning loss, as well as those that need richer problem solving tasks to excel. The alternative seating will give students voice and choice in our classroom and allow them to work in a way that makes them feel most comfortable. The fidgets I have chosen come highly recommended and enjoyed by my students, who use them to stay calm in class.
All of these elements are especially important in a math classroom, where students often already feel alienated and uncomfortable. There is so much room for growth and safety in our classroom, and I hope that it can be provided here!
