I teach in a high needs public school in Milwaukee. Only 2% of our students are on grade level in Reading, and only 3% in Math. One hundred percent of our students are below the poverty level & receive free lunch.
Your support will dramatically increase the number of students who will be able to reach grade level by the end of sixth grade. I will use the chart paper to create anchor charts. Effective anchor charts will help my students transfer their learning across contexts & allow them to work independently. The best anchor charts serve as a scaffold for students, reminding them of a new understanding, an academic experience, or academic vocabulary. As my sixth graders progress through the school year, it is important they have the tools necessary to take their learning to the next level. The most authentic anchor charts are ones created with the students. To reinforce the strategies we post on our anchor charts, the copy paper & cardstock will allow my students to have durable study task cards to use at home & school throughout the year. Pencils allow us to apply the strategies from the anchor charts to our writing & chair socks allow for a quiet & peaceful classroom.
Scholastic Storyworks will allow me to transform my language arts lessons! Every issue features compelling & complex texts in a wide range of genres. Rigorous activities, online videos, differentiated passages & questioning enables every reader to be challenged! Scholastic News connects current events to our classroom at a variety reading levels. These two magazines work together to reach each student where they are and bring them to the next learning level.
