When given free time, my fourth grade students in Alaska typically choose some physical outdoor activity or to be inside having "screen time." These nine and ten year olds hike, hunt, fish, ski, camp and still love being inside on some form of technology. My school is set at the base of the Chugach Mountain Range where outdoor adventure is accessible.
I cannot think of a better career than as an elementary school teacher, yet lately I face the challenge of raising every students' academic performance level to be on grade level or above in reading, writing, mathematics and science. With students performing anywhere from a second grade level to a seventh grade level in any given subject, I attempt to provide a learning environment which is multi-leveled, a safe place to learn emotionally, and set up meaningful on-going projects.
My students will take standardized tests online for the first time in April. Daily learning with iPad minis will increase their comfort with technology.
