I teach photography through a fine arts lens to approximately 160 high school students per year. Many of those students I will have had in my various photography classes for three years. The student population at my school tends to be intelligent, curious, and creative. Most are college bound and college ready when they leave. They are well traveled. Our school is an IB school and so we have students not just from the neighborhood, but from all over the city. We always have a large foreign exchange contingent, many of whom take my classes.
One reason I love teaching photography, is that students are taking it because they are interested and motivated. They really enjoy learning digital editing, working in the darkroom, and exploring both old and more contemporary techniques. Many of my students have not taken an art class before, but they leave with a body of work they are proud of and see themselves in a way they hadn't before-as an artist.
