My students are from the Berkeley, Ferguson, and Kinloch communities here in St. Louis County, MO. Most of my students are on free and reduced lunch and come from families of low socioeconomic status. However, they are all bright students with a bright future ahead of them. My students do not allow their environment to dictate their destiny. They love performing in all aspects of the band program (marching, concert, etc.), especially Marching Band. This keeps them motivated, because they take ownership in being a part of something greater than themselves. Our school is very community-oriented that is built on healthy positive relationships. My students love serving in that capacity through events, parades, assemblies, games, and pep rallies. We SWEAT WHITE & BLEED BLUE!
Our band program is very active and there are students who do not own their own instrument, and must therefore use the school instrument. Many of those instruments are not in great shape, and sometimes have to go through repairs for new pads, a spring, and minor screw adjustments. Even though currently some playing issues may occur, the students still take pride in using a school instrument because they understand the long term benefits of being in band (e.g. scholarships).
