I teach at a lower income middle school (grades 6-8), where we (our staff) work not individually but as a community to serve our students. Our population is culturally diverse. My students like many in their age group, love to communicate and work with electronic devices and technology. We are not a BYOD (bring your own device) district, and the technology in the classroom is limited. When my students are given an assignment where they can use a computer in the computer lab, I notice the level of engagement and collaboration increases tremendously. They want to share their work and their ideas in my math class but it's not always easy due to the plain (non interactive) whiteboard. My students are challenged daily more than ever due to the Common Core State Standards. Many of my students are visual, hands on learners, and of course very active. Many enjoy being in the spotlight and will show their work as much as possible using the expo markers (boring!).
