It is vitally important for students to begin to understand the world they are living in before we send them out in it to make their way. Some students have tremendous support systems at home, while others struggle to navigate their day-to-day lives almost alone. While classic literature has its place, books like the ones I have requested show students a diverse group of people with problems that might be similar to what they have to deal with themselves written by a diverse group of authors. Even if a student is not familiar with a particular situation presented, reading these accounts of how real people overcame adversity to succeed in life helps to develop a sense of sympathy or empathy for others and realize there can be hope even when things look bleak.
The teaching of literature circles gives students small group instruction and an opportunity to have real discussions with their peers in a non-threatening, more comfortable setting. As a class, we would be able to cover Nevada Content Standards in Reading Non-FIction Text RI.11-12.1 through RI.11-12.9
