My school is a public school for identified gifted learners. My students are identified gifted fifth graders from diverse backgrounds who come to class daily with a desire for meaningful relevant learning. Since I teach science and math, my students are naturally engaged when inquiry-based design and project-based learning are at the forefront. I teach two groups of learners. My morning class has 25 fifth graders, and the afternoon class has 26 students. I have the honor of facilitating math and science work with each group for three hours each day.
The students I have thrive when presented with a challenge and have the potential to truly impact their communities and the world in a positive manner. With the heightened and necessary emphasis on science, technology, engineering and mathematics in education, my students are hungry for opportunities to dig deep into these fields. The fifth graders I teach want to utilize their global awareness to make a difference.
