My students are spunky 3-6 year old who are primarily visually impaired, but often have other disabilities like cerebral palsy, speech or hearing impairments, seizure disorders and developmental delays. The students love preschool and need adaptive devices to communicate with peers and staff. The visually impaired preschool students are mainstreamed with kindergarten students during activities like music, dance, yoga, P.E., recess and assemblies.
Our school is a Pre-K through 5th grade campus that serves a diverse population from Oakland. Our students are 23% African American, 33% white, 16% Latino. 15% Asian/Pacific Islander, and 10% multi-racial. There are 22 languages represented in our parent, student, and staff communities and 12% of our students are English Learners. Over 35% of our students receive free and reduced lunch. The district's elementary level visually impaired program is part of our school and our visually impaired students are a central part of our community.
