Because our bodies take in information through our sensory systems, providing students with opportunities for movement and exposure to sensory tools is crucial in creating a safe, comfortable, and productive learning environment. This is especially true for my students with autism, many of whom are impacted by sensory processing disorders.
My students require frequent breaks in order to remain focused and on-task with the various learning experiences in our classroom, and these breaks are most effective when they are able to use sensory tools. The sensory tables with different textured materials included in my project will help my students to de-escalate when in crisis, receive the sensory input they need, and decompress when needed. My students benefit from exposure to tactile materials like many of the sensory tools included in my project.
My students also will benefit from exposure to visual sensory tools such as the sensory lamp. This lamp will help to keep a calm classroom environment so that optimal learning can occur.
The flexible seating options in my project will help my students who struggle to sit still in a chair. Often these students, instead, will get up from their stationary chairs and leave the work table. With more flexible seating options, however, I am able to provide a positive alternative that helps meet my students' needs for movement, while also helping them remain in their designated spaces so they can continue to access teacher instruction occurring at the table.
