I teach in an Urban school. Approximately 98 percent of my students receive free or reduced price lunch. Many of my students are from single family homes. Many of their families struggle economically. Statistics indicate that many of my students come to school hungry. They lag behind their peers academically who attend more economically gifted schools. They are more likely to be unprepared or not ready for school. Unless someone intervenes, they may never reach their full potential. So they are likely to live their lives in generational poverty. They are funny, warm and loving. They struggle to learn to read and often feel overwhelmed. Many of my students live in violence. Our school is within five miles of three housing projects. The school is located in one of the most economically challenged areas of the city. Our school is often the only place that our students feel safe in a day.
