I teach in a high-poverty, low performing elementary school. My school has been classified by the state as Program Improvement. My students are all capable of learning and succeeding. They require a little extra love and support because they are not only learning to read, they are also learning to acquire and master the English language. I work hard everyday to instill a love of reading in each of my second grade students. I strive to make reading fun and rewarding. One of the main challenges is that my students come from homes where books are not available. They don't go home and read after school. Most do not have a bedtime story read to them. Many of my students parents do not speak or read in English which means their only reading practice occurs at school. My students are finally at a level where they are reading short storybooks on their own and they are hooked! They have caught the reading bug!
