My students are from all over the world and speak many languages. They are motivated to learn and are proud of their countries of birth. Last year, I had a student from Haiti who was interested in Greek mythology and I gave him Edith Hamilton's book. He brought it back to me in a week, telling me how much he enjoyed it. Last week, a student from Bangladesh asked me about leprechauns and whether they are real. I gave her a book to share with her family. A former student ran into my classroom a few weeks ago looking for 32 Candles. She reminded me that she had seen another student reading it, and she heard it was a good book.
Most of the books in my classroom library I have bought myself. The school library is not able to respond to children's requests as easily as I can because access to the library is limited (it's closed after school for a remedial program) and it's not open before school. The number of volumes is limited, as well.
