Our school has many economically disadvantaged students who do not have "Life Essentials" such as shoes, or have outgrown their shoes. Some of them come to the competitions barefoot or with slippers/flip flops. They are hardworking, motivated kids who enjoy attending the Special Olympic Games. These students need to attend practices weekly and show up on the weekends for the area and State games. They learn to work as a team and to support each other. They learn rules and strategy for the different sports. They also use math skills to measure, count, keep score, and keep time. The Special Olympics Team have helped keep the students on track academically, and deepen family/school connections.
