My public high school has many students who have migrant parents and/or low socio-economic status. 80% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. However, that doesn't hold them back: many are motivated to achieve high levels in high school so they can go to 4 year universities when they graduate. Many will be the first in their families to go to college. During the school year I open my classroom at lunchtime every day to assist my students with their mathematics. Most of the time it is helping with the AP Statistics I teach, but these students will also come to me for help with their other classes like Math Analysis. It makes me happy to help them because they are showing their motivation.
