My students are a part of a Title 1 middle school in Charlotte, North Carolina. It is unfortunate that most of my students come from pretty tough home lives, economically and emotionally speaking. They share the school with students who share similar home lives. Most of these children possess great musical talent and desire to participate in band, but just don't have the economical needs to do so. The music program at my school is underdeveloped due to a low Fine Arts budget. Specifically, any music materials that I need I must request administration to take the money out of the school instructional budget (used for materials like textbooks and technology used in core subject areas). Because everything comes out of the same budget, my requests must be very low in cost, which makes it difficult to build a strong band program. I am unable to use the school instructional budget for the purchase of instruments, which makes it even more difficult - even close to impossible.
