When it comes to children with special needs, physical education is a therapeutic practice crucial to their well-being. Because of the nature of their disability, our kids constantly feel trapped and constrained inside of their own bodies. Like Naoki Higashida, when our students play, run, jump and get their bodies moving, their anxiety subsides and they begin to feel relaxed, safe and happy. Not only does physical education improve our students' moods, it is necessary for proper brain development and therefore, can help our students retain the skills and strategies they need to become independent.
