Art Spiegelman once said, "Comics are a gateway drug to literacy." And it's true. Just last week, my scholars read a nonfiction book entitled, "Yummy: Last Days of a Southside Shorty." This novel led to a unit on nonfiction using the New York Times, Time Magazine, and other articles far above their Lexile. They ate it up. So why do I need so many graphic novels in my classroom? The answer is simple:
If I get them hooked on reading now, they will never kick the addiction. Please help me create a classroom library that invites them in, encourages them to explore, and begs them to keep reading. Right now my library is filled with the classics and young adult lit. I know they will loves the books I already have if I can just get them to start exploring. That is what graphic novels will do for them. They will enter for the graphic novels, but they will return with a thirst for stories and experiences. That's when true literacy begins.
