My students are very eager, motivated eight-year olds with very limited resources. One of my high achievers already has over 100 Accelerated Reader points, while a couple of my special needs students just conquered the five point Accelerated Reader goal. No matter what level they are at, reading is seen as a positive, enriching experience. Our elementary school is a Title I school with a predominantly Hispanic population where most of the parents do not speak English. Our wonderful principal has very high standards for these students, and feels their only way out of poverty is through education. Reading is crucial to helping these students succeed in school as well as building their self confidence.
