I teach reading to two groups of 4th grade students with diverse skills, interests and backgrounds. Many of the students in these two classes receive supplemental reading services through Title 1 and other reading intervention programs that are offered before and after school.
We're a small school of approximately 425 students just outside of the state's second largest city. Our high needs population is 40%. The school community prides itself in following the DREAM PLEDGE: demonstrate citizenship, respect school self and others, embrace differences, actively participate in learning and maintain a safe environment.
One thing is for sure, these kids work hard and deserve the opportunity to succeed, but in order to do so they need the appropriate reading materials.
