Given the greater impact the pandemic has had on our low income students of color, we are focusing this school year on helping our students continue to grow academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. Our project focuses on fostering this growth by expanding and improving our Action Based Learning Lab. The Action Based Learning Lab allows students to experience the connection between physical movement and brain activity so that they are able to better learn and retain academic materials. Currently our lab is a hodge podge of equipment that teachers contributed from their homes. It includes a treadmill, a balance beam, and an exercise bike. We would like to add additional workout material to impact more students and expand the reach of the lab. Our counselor plans to conduct guidance lessons in the space, teachers will host remediation groups, and we plan to open it up to families a few evenings a month to encourage stress relief and a healthy lifestyle.
We are hoping that the completion of this project will not only allow our students the opportunity to improve academically, but that it will also allow them to continue to grow social emotionally and learn strategies to help them cope with the stresses and trauma of their lives. Additionally, we see this project benefiting our entire community as it creates opportunities to engage parents and community members in the use of the lab. This communal approach will allow the coping skills to be reinforced, further growing and benefiting our students.
