My school is a Title 1 school and the second largest elementary school in the state, with more than 1000 students. Our students are a very diverse group, including Hawaiians, Marshallese, and Tongan and English is a second language for many.
With a focus on math and reading, integrating science and social studies through high interest magazines is necessary to introduce students to the vast world around them. Providing reading material which includes diverse cultures, also creates connections for learning and tolerance for differences.
Our classroom enjoys exploring and becoming scientists, this high interest is what inspires little minds to want more knowledge and develops the foundation of interests in their future.
