This project is intended for my newly arrived 9th-grade students who have very limited English proficiency and vocabulary. For them, reading even sight words is a struggle. To be able to read, they require heavy scaffolding and vocabulary and translanguaging support. The pen I am requesting will help them independently read a word, a sentence, or a paragraph. They will use the pen to listen to pronunciations as well and translate the text into their native languages such as French and Spanish.
Using this pen will give my students the desire and the motivation to work on their fluency and phonics because they want to be able to read. These immigrant students don't want to give up. But they need some tools such as this pen to give them an opening into a new world.
