My diverse population includes both local and military dependents. The later contributing knowledge from travels. Unlike many of our island children whose experiences revolve around neighborhoods/districts. My students come with a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds which affect teaching and learning. Assigning research or Internet programs such as IXL for homework is not realistic for students whose parents could not afford to repair/replace a home computer. Thus, in these homes computers are not used for homework. To insure access to learning, I need to provide these opportunities in the classroom. Which is quite a challenge with only two computers! But, it is gratifying to see students take risks by testing different ways to apply their thinking and understanding while using technology. Local students talk and write in detail about their families and everyday experiences, while others write about where they've been and what they've seen. Together they create a rich environment!
