My 10th grade students are an empathetic, enthusiastic bunch. They attend a mid-sized public high school in a large urban school district and come from a diverse range of backgrounds. Over 90% are living below the poverty level and over 20% do not speak English as a first language. Many of their families cannot afford to purchase books for their homes, so my young readers must rely on the public library, which often has very long waiting lists for current books.
