Flexible seating gives students a chance to take hold of their learning and make better choices that will allow them to tap in to their most creative and engaged selves! During independent work times, students may choose a spot in our classroom that works best for them. Many students choose to sit on the floor, their desk, under tables or the class library. Allowing them to make this chose gives them a sense of ownership with their education they have never had before. Students feel comfortable, listened to and acknowledged when their choice of seat and location is made possible. Changing the way our 2nd grade classroom is run has enhanced their environment with a more nurturing and creative feel. Students have made better choices, are more engaged and are more inclined to get their work done.
The flexible seating options that I have selected will enhance our learning environment and give them additional seating options to make more engaged learning choices. The bouncy balls will allow students to stay in one place and focus easier. These will be extremely beneficial for some students that just need to get their energy out by bouncing in place. The various floor seats and the stools will allow for additional seating options that may be easily moved around.
I have experienced first hand how choice can positively affect my 2nd graders and I know more options will encourage them to be more creative and help them grow even more!
