Our Kindergarten through Sixth grade students attend an urban elementary school in Alaska. We are a large school (500+ students) with wonderfully thoughtful students and hard-working and committed teachers.
Like many school communities, ours is one where diversity is not limited to ethnicity. While 51% of our students are non-white, and our students speak many languages other than English (Bengali, Filipino, Samoan, Spanish, Russian...), they are equally diverse in their opportunities at home for healthy movement and physical fitness.
Some of our students take swim lessons, play on soccer teams, and go hiking and skiing on weekends. However, many come from homes that don't have the time, resources, or cultural capital to value daily exercise enough to make it a priority.
