I teach approximately 510 loving and creative students ranging from Kindergarten to 5th Grade in my music class and I see all of my students every other day. Many of my students have faced many personal hardships in their lives that most adults will never have to face. In May 2011, our city was hit by an F5 tornado that destroyed our school, Irving Elementary, along with many of my students' homes. In addition to surviving a tornado, most of my students live in a home with very high poverty. Despite these hardships, my students are curious, happy, musical, creative, sympathetic, and always willing to give hugs and compliments to brighten each others' days. I admire all of my students and they teach me about life just as much as I teach them about music. They are a fantastic bunch of kids that deserve the best.
