I already have a balance board and an exercise ball that students can access freely in class. However, only two out of my 29 students can actually use them at once. I have requested two balance boards more because there are a couple of other work spaces they can use if I actually had the items. Also, as soon as one student asks to use the exercise balance chair, other kids want to as well. It鈥檚 a nice option since the student can still sit at their seat but engage their muscles at the same time.
A child who couldn't focus on a math assessment at all in his seat all of sudden was able to focus for a full 20 minutes because of the balance board. Some kids simply don't do as well sitting at a desk all day, even with breaks to get up and move. The wobble chairs would allow them to actually be at their desks and able to move at the same time. In the same way adults like other options during a meeting, some kids focus much better on their writing or math while moving.
Finally, I have requested the laptop tables because it gives students variety while on the classroom Chromebooks. I have a couple of comfy chairs students would use last year, but the use of the laptops wasn鈥檛 as comfortable simply on their laps. The tables would allow them to sit against a wall or cupboard and still have the Chromebook stable at the right height.
