Our students are from a rural area, a Title I school with demographics that would not allow most of these kids to travel outside their own city, much less their state. The school is 89% African American, 6% Caucasian, 3 % Hispanic, 2% other. Many of our students have after school jobs and are involved in sports, band, art and drama.
The students say, "We are not a diversified group. Our school is small and we fit the statistical arena of drop outs, teenage pregnancy, and lack of community support".
I believe this can be changed. I believe this view to be skewed and one way to change it is to show them other situations: other "worlds". We try hard to teach the students that the way to change the forces in life is through education. Education is the key to survival. Large gaps exist in the students' minds but with proper exposure they can be taught real problem solving solutions and become part of the answer, not the problem, for our future generation.
