Our middle school (grades 6-8) is located in an urban neighborhood in New York State. Many of our students are new to the country and learning English as a second language. Over 95 percent of our students are eligible for a free lunch.
While we have many students who have already discovered how reading enriches one's life , there are others who still haven't discovered their "home run book" that sends them returning to the stacks week after week. One subgroup that our faculty has identified as being generally averse to reading is our male population. While many boys will read nonfiction books about topics like sports and cars, teachers have a harder time finding fiction that boys can relate to and enjoy.
