I want my students to want to read. Most books that they will experience in a classroom are books that are assigned to them. I believe in choice and in order to get students to love reading, we need to allow them to read and discuss books that they are interested in. Students also need to be exposed to books that they might not typically pull off the library shelf.
I want my students to WANT to read. I want my students to WANT to try new books by new authors and explore new genres. I want my students to WANT to be kind and tolerant of others. I want my students to WANT to share their reading experiences with those around them, to help inspire others to read.
These books will cause students to take another look at those around them before they judge someone by the color of their skin, the religion they practice or the neighborhood they live in. These types of books are essential to promote acceptance at school and in the community and world we live in.
Some of topics I will be focusing on this next year are diversity, acceptance and tolerance of others. These books that I have chosen will allow students to put themselves in others shoes and see the world through the eyes and experiences of others. These books will allow students opportunities to discuss, in a small group and whole group setting, topics as cultural diversity, racism and overcoming adversity.
