The school I teach at is a very positive environment where students can count on administrators, teachers and staff to listen to them and hear their concerns. Parents, although of meager means, support in ways they feel they can.
A good portion of the student enrollment is still grasping the English language and learning to become independent learners. It is imperative that I implement intensive teaching strategies that strengthen my students' literacy skills in all areas: writing, reading, writing, and critical thinking/problem solving.
State funding covers only the basics of what is necessary in a classroom: furniture, bulletin boards, infrastructure for technology, some older model desktop computers for student use, textbooks, and paper supplies. There is no additional budget allotted for teachers to purchase additional learning games, visual aides, etc, which, inevitably, come out of the teacher's pocket simply because s/he desires to provide enhanced student experiences.
