My students live in a small rural town in California. We are not an affluent community and we have many wonderful families who are struggling to make ends meet. Some children simply do not come to school ready to learn. At the first grade level this means that many have not been read to at home and often do not have even their most basic needs met such as proper nutrition and clothing.
