Many of the students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and have not been in an educational setting prior to my classroom. My pre K class is part of a charter school that is trying to give these students more opportunity. Many students have little support from home and depend on the school for much more than learning the curriculum. Their communication skills are often lacking. In the beginning of the year, a large percentage of the class cannot write their name, identify any letters or numbers, count, identify shapes, speak in complete sentences to express their thoughts, etc. By the end of the year, they are expected to be able to write their full names, be beginning to read, count past 50, identify numbers, letters, shapes, patterns, rhyme, know letter sounds, read sight words, add, etc. These students come from behind, but are hard workers and want to achieve.
