My students are very eager readers, however our school's Title 1 budget cannot afford to stock classroom libraries with reading books, let alone engaging ones that my students can relate to. Many of them don't have access to a diverse genre of books at home and our school library rarely updates their books, therefore, having a variety of books would highly increase their interest during their literature circle groups. In the literature circle groups, students read a novel with their peers at their shared reading level and together work on analyzing the text, learning new vocabulary and increasing their comprehension skills. These groups allow students to foster and sustain academic discourse about literature and in turn, creates more motivated writers and readers.
The literature that touches their heart and soul is the one that they cannot stop talking and writing about. For my students, being able to make connections with books makes a huge impact in their motivation and also translates in their written voice. If they can see themselves in the story or relate to a character in the book, it makes their reading meaningful and more exciting. Your generous donation will not only allow them to access new journeys in literature, but they will be also able to read and write about the limitless futures that await them.
