My students and I have just begun a foray into the next level of classroom technology. Until now the technology has mostly been me modeling for students and I want to get the tech into students' hands.
We have set up a google classroom and classes on Khan Academy where students get a personalized learning experience with customized content.
Students receive instant feedback on their progress. They get hints, instructional videos, and step-by-step solutions to learn from their mistakes and build confidence. Through this work, actionable, real-time progress information is sent to students, teachers, and parents. Students working successfully, independently on this mastery-based model will allow me to build flexible groupings based on student understanding.
For each question answered correctly the website provides a small celebration with a sound and confetti on the screen :-). With 25 students, these must be muted so other students are not distracted. Headphones will help kids get into the zone. Students will also be able to listen to the instructional videos during independent or small group work time. They will be engaged by both visual and audio to reinforce the ideas. When students earn the opportunity to play interesting math games they will be able to turn up the volume and HAVE FUN without the noise distracting others.
