My students are in 5th grade. We are at one of the most highly impacted schools in the district. This means our families have high poverty, minority and mobility rates. This, combined with other elements of their lives, results in many of my students entering the classroom reading below proficiency. A critical aspect of achieving grade-level reading proficiency is getting the students interested in reading. Many of my students have not had the chance to recognize the power of books. The reading culture we encourage is lost outside of the classroom. Therefore, while they are in the classroom, we need to help them realize the magic that books can create. We need to give them the opportunity to get lost in different worlds and to consume books with the same vigor we did as children. To give reading a fighting chance, we need to start with books that students actually want to read.
