My students are survivors of sexual exploitation, emotional/physical neglect and abuse from their family members, witnesses of trauma and members of gangs that have been given a second chance. We offer them a safe place to reconstruct themselves through therapy, a fully accredited school, an equine program, full medical/dental/vision care, and psychiatric services. They are fully enmeshed in a peer-driven culture and they are encouraged/supported to hold each other accountable and to become leaders on campus. Although my students are educationally disadvantaged due to their backgrounds, they are so driven to find success in their individual programs and their education. The students in my classroom are challenged further by identified disabilities that require them to receive additional support. They typically are my students from 1-2 years and, during that time, they absorb knowledge at an amazing rate and respond incredibly to any opportunity to get involved in art.
