My students attend a inner city, high poverty school where their basic needs of food, clothing, and safety have to take a priority before they can begin to retain any educational information. My students often read 2-3 grade levels below because survival must often come before education.
In my classroom I have a total of eight different reading groups. I have two guided reading groups that read at the end of first/ beginning of second grade level. I have three groups that read at a third/ fourth grade level and three groups at a fifth grade level or higher. With the wide range of abilities, it is important to put books in their hands that meet their needs whether they be below, on grade level, or above.
My goal is meet each student at the reading level they are at so that they can set goals to read and comprehend at their grade level. They need to see that they can succeed and some day break the cycle of poverty in their homes and in their community. I want them to see that they can become anything they want.
