I work in a low income, urban high school that serves many under-privileged, minority students, many of whom are recent immigrants and English language learners. Many of them are going to be the first in their family to attend college or university. My school is the poorest school in our district, and as a result, we receive little to no materials and resources and lack many amenities and luxuries available to suburban high schools. As a result, few of them have ever used a graphing calculator, Excel, or mathematical modeling software before and have no idea how broadly math can be applied using these tools. Despite any obstacles, my school does the best that it can to offer meals, health services, and extracurricular enrichment to our students. Watching my students overcome these barriers, challenge themselves, and work to better themselves and their current situations is a constant source of inspiration to me.
