Reading Lord of the Flies with my seniors has become my favorite teaching/learning unit, and many students have said the same at the book鈥檚 conclusion. At their ages, seniors are prepared to embrace the allegorical themes, cautionary messages, and hopeful conclusion of Golding鈥檚 work. Amid the chaos of learning in a pandemic, I want my students to have one final high school opportunity to log off, pick up an actual book, and immerse themselves in reading and discussing an important work of literature. I am always hopeful that once my students are untethered by teachers and parents, they will stay grounded in their decision making, that if they are faced by the lure of mob mentality or find themselves witness to apathy for those who cannot help themselves, they might remember our Three Weeks on the Island.
