95% of the schools population is of Hispanic origin. The majority of parents work two or three labor jobs in farming. With the downturn in the economy, large corporate farms have downsized and limited available jobs to save money. As a result, some families are experiencing the loss of a father or mother who is out of the state or country, trying to find jobs. This leaves more opportunity for the students to venture out, after school and evening times, and find themselves wandering into gang territories or victims of gang violence.
The kids are looking for a safe place to go, and are interested in learning how to play the guitar, a life-long hobby, that would keep them safe, after school, and engage them in promoting their social welfare by avoiding the gang lifestyle and finding a family of friends at school.
I have really good kids, who do not play traditional North American band instruments-who want to learn music and become happy productive citizens upon graduation.
