I teach Kindergarten in a very remote, isolated area of a very rural county. It has recently been coined the poorest county in the nation. I have twenty-three students ages 5 and 6. My students come from very disadvantaged backgrounds and start school with delayed vocabulary and few experiences. Our school does have a Pre-K program, however enrollment is limited. Only 17 of the 23 students in my classroom attended Pre-K. I know that young children vary considerably in the pattern and pace of their growth. My students vary from those with language deficiency and delayed learning to students who are ready for on-level instruction and beyond. A considerable amount of time is spent planning how to tailor my instruction to benefit the needs of all of my students and effectively accommodate their unique learning styles.
