I teach a group of 2nd grade students who come to school with a lot more on their minds other than what they will learn that day. Our school is 83% socioeconomically disadvantaged on free and reduced-price lunch along with 80% English language learners. The majority of my students are in need of constant encouragement in order to stay focused in school and care about learning/their future. My goal is to make learning fun and readily accessible so that each student, regardless of their lack of English or academic skills, feels empowered to succeed.
Our school follows an RtI (Response to Intervention) model in which we have 1 hour every day of intense reading instruction in which students are leveled according to their ability in order to receive individualized, skill-based instruction within small groups.
