Reading and understanding current events is a crucial part of growing up to be an informed, educated, and participating citizen in our country. For many years math teachers have been focus on teaching math as a procedural task. I want my students to participate in higher level thinking and learning. More than 80% of my students are below grade level reading.
Seventy-five percent of the students in our at-risk school live below the poverty line. Seventy percent of our students are Hispanic, and many other cultural backgrounds are represented. My students come to school already at a disadvantage because of the difficult home lives they lead, including low socioeconomic status, single parent families, drug and alcohol abuse in the home, physical and verbal abuse, gang activity, and more. Many of these challenges contribute to our students reading far below grade level.
