My students come from an urban public school district. Many of them are English Language Learners and relatively new to this country. They mostly come from low economic families where English is not spoken within the household. For many, their inability to practice basic communication skills in a "real" environment is a major factor leading to their struggle with comprehending language arts. Yet, they have proved to me on numerous occasions that they will not let this roadblock impede their desire to learn. By staying after school or arriving early in the morning to receive additional help, they are making great strides in their education.
