My students are English Language learners. They come from all over the globe and bring a wealth of life experience with them. They attend a large inner city high school which can be incredibly daunting. They value personal relationships and make real connections with teachers and staff who take the time to get to know them. Through reading in English, my students not only develop their vocabulary, reading and writing skills, but they are provided with the opportunity to voice their thoughts and articulate their beliefs.
To see my students with a reading book in their hand and the look on their face when they know they can take the book home is humbling; but more than it, it empowers them to take hold of knowledge and gain ownership of it.
